In addition to the Cougars, accepting invitations were the University of Cincinnati, University of Central Florida (UCF) and Brigham Young University (BYU). Last September, the Big 12 presidents voted to expand the league with four schools. The move opens the door for Houston to begin Big 12 competition in all sports in the 2023-24 academic year. The Big 12 is home to the last two NCAA champion men’s basketball teams, with teams advancing to the last four Final Fours and each of the last three national championship games.The University of Houston today reached an exit agreement with the American Athletic Conference to end its decade-long membership on July 1, 2023, setting the stage for the Cougars to join the Big 12 Conference next fall. Last season teams from the Big 12 won eight national championships across the Conference’s 23 sponsored sports, with an additional six teams finishing as runners up. Joining Commissioner Brett Yormark to promote the Big 12 brand in the media capital of the world will be Baylor NCAA champion men’s basketball coach Scott Drew, and West Virginia Hall of Fame men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins. On Wednesday, October 12 th, the Big 12 will be staging an all-day promotional blitz in New York City.
